STOKE GIFFORD
Stoke Gifford is a large dormitory village, and parish in Gloucestershire, England, in the northern suburbs of Bristol, known along with its neighbours as being part of the North Bristol Fringe.
The village is made up of a number of areas:
The Old Village. This centres along North Road where the original hamlet first started before the Norman era. Home to St Michael's church a beautiful Norman-built church with historic graveyard. The village has The Beaufort Arms a very popular local pub, and Bristol Parkway Railway Station. The local church runs the local events, although in a secular way, so all are welcome.
The Royals. A 1980's era housing area with many cul-de-sacs and a family atmosphere. This backs onto '40 Acres', also known as Royal Park, a wildlife and cycling haven.
Mead Park. Also a modern area north of the old village. It is also full of young families, and has a number of shops which constitute the village central hub. This backs onto Meade Park, which is a man made modern park with plenty of green areas and home to Stoke Gifford FC. It houses three safe children's and adventure parks and dog walking and cyclist friendly routes.
Church Road/New Road. An area south of the railway line, and is a mixture of old and later developments.
Great Stoke. This is the newest part of the village and is normally just referred to as the east side of Stoke Gifford. It is home to Virgin Leisure Centre and local shops, and two childrens parks. It is also where access is gained from Great Stoke Way (dual carriageway) which will form the new Stoke Gifford By-pass when connected to the Avon Ring Road. Bristol Parkway Railway Station can be accessed here, and also the Parkway North Park & Ride, which is a new, but unused ground level car park.
Other places in the parish include:
Harry Stoke. A hamlet adjacent the village, currently being enlarged withh a development known as Highbrook Park. This will add an extra population of over 3000 to the parish.
Abbeywood. Named after Splatts Abbey, this area is a mix of commercial and residential. Home to Abbeywood school, WISE sports campus, City of Bristol college and university status Bristol Technology & Engineering Academy. As well as modern housing it also encompasses MOD Abbeywood and Friends Life head office. Abbeywood Retail Park is on the boundary with Filton.
Little Stoke. A purpose built housing estate for the aerospace industry in nearby Patchway and Filton. Home of Patchway Railway Station, Aretians RFC and Riverside Leisure Centre. It has a number of shops and a pub (The Stokers), and is where the Parish Council resides. Little Stoke Park is home to Stoke Lane FC, and the west's largest BMX/mountainbike track. A skateboard/scooter ramp is also situated here along with childrens play equipment.
Cheswick. This is a hamlet on the southern fringe of the parish. A modern development of housing and local parks.
Stoke Park. This area is named after the Stoke Park hospital (now apartments). A stunning building which can be seen from the M32 on top of the hill, marking the most southerly point of Stoke Gifford.

NORTH FRINGE NEIGHBOURS

Stoke Gifford is surrounded by a diverse range of towns and villages that make up the North Bristol Fringe. Along with its proximity to the M32, M4 and M5 motorways, the A38 and the A4174 Ring Road and of course Bristol Parkway Railway Station with direct trains to London Paddington, Reading, Swindon, Cardiff and Swansea, Stoke Gifford is a very sought after place to buy property.
Its neighbours include:
Filton. An historic town with a mix of post war housing, aerospace industries, golf course, sports centre and an expanding town centre. With a population of 8000 it is a major employment town in the North Bristol fringe.
Patchway. A purpose-built town to cater for the aerospace industries and Filton Airfield (now defunct), it is growing with a new development to the south known as Charlton Hayes. With a population of over 9000, soon to be 13000 it is a major commuter town. Stoke Lodge in the east of the town is separated by the A38 and adjoins Little Stoke. Patchway is home to Cribbs Causeway shopping complex.
Bradley Stoke. With a population of 30000 is by far the biggest of the towns in the Fringe. It has no major employment, but is a popular family friendly 'new town' (built mainly in the 1980's and 90's). Most residents travel through Filton and Stoke Gifford to work in Bristol city centre or travel on to the motorway network. Bradley Stoke has a brand new purpose built town centre which is home to restaurants and large national chain stores.
Winterbourne. Lying to the east is a large village with approximately 5000 residents, which is joined by the village of Hambrook, an historic pre-Norman village. The village of Winterbourne Down is a sought after retreat which used to be larger than Winterburne before development in the 1970's.
Almondsbury. A small village crossing the M4/M5 interchange, which is named after it. Straddling the A38 it has a large business park named Aztec West which houses major companies, and is home to many sports teams including Almondsbury Town FC, North Bristol RFC and the Gloucestershire FA. Almondsbury is home to both the Bristol Hilton and Aztec Hotels.
